Missed Opportunity: Joe Manganiello’s Chance to Play Superman in Man of Steel Hindered by True Blood Schedule Conflicts
Joe Manganiello was approached in mid-2011 to screen test for the lead role of Superman in the movie Man of Steel. However, due to scheduling conflicts with his TV series True Blood, he was unable to take on the role in the final stages of casting. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Manganiello shared that he was asked for his measurements for the Superman suit and was excited about the opportunity to screen test. However, the shoot date for Man of Steel changed, which would have conflicted with 11 weeks of his True Blood schedule, and they were unable to work out the timing. Manganiello never got to try on the iconic suit or screen test for the role.
After completing filming for season four of True Blood, Manganiello worked on other projects including a scene in USA’s White Collar with his former college classmate Matt Bomer and the film adaptation of the popular book What To Expect When You’re Expecting. He also returned to Los Angeles to shoot a scene of Two and a Half Men with Ashton Kutcher. Despite missing out on the opportunity to play Superman, Manganiello continued to work on a variety of projects in the entertainment industry.
