He’s best known for his roles in several iconic 1980s films, like his role as Johnny Lawrence within the Karate Kid (1984), a task he reprised within the film’s sequel and therefore the YouTube Red show Cobra Kai. In 2004, he was nominated for an Academy Award for co-writing and producing the short film Most.

Zabka’s breakout acting role came in his first movie, The Karate Kid (1984). He played Johnny Lawrence, the most antagonist to the title character played by Ralph Macchio. He had no previous martial arts experience at the time but was an accomplished wrestler. His participation within the film inspired him to find out the self-defense of Tang Soo Do and he later earned a second-degree green belt.

During the 1980s, Zabka appeared within the comedy movies only one of the blokes (1985) and Back to high school (1986). Zabka also co-starred on the CBS television series The Equalizer because of the son of the title character (1986–89). During the 1990s and 2000s, he acted mostly in independent films while studying to be a filmmaker. Zabka played the role of Greg Larsen within the 2000 television cult film Python and reprised the role because of the film’s primary villain in its 2002 sequel. In 2003, he wrote and produced the short film Most, shot on location within the Czech Republic and Poland. Most (aka The Bridge) had its performance at the Sundance festival 2003 and won numerous awards at prestigious film festivals, including better of Festival at the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films in 2003. In 2004, he was nominated for an Academy Award for many within the Live Action Short Film category.

In 2007, Zabka directed and starred during a music video for the band No More Kings entitled “Sweep the Leg”. The video stars Zabka as a caricature of himself, living during a trailer within the desert and hooked into his role within the Karate Kid. The video includes cameos by several of the first Karate Kid cast members, including Martin Kove and Ralph Macchio. In 2010, Zabka directed Rascal Flatts in their music video for the song “Why Wait”. that very same year, Zabka made a cameo appearance within the comedy movie bathtub machine. In 2013, Zabka, alongside Macchio, guest-starred within the season 8 episode of How I Met Your Mother, “The Bro Mitzvah”. Zabka also appeared in several episodes of the sitcom’s ninth season. Zabka also directed commercials for clients including Little Tikes and Verizon at Heresy in Venice, California.

On August 4, 2017, it had been announced that Zabka would reprise his role as Johnny Lawrence during a 10 episode Karate Kid revival series for YouTube Red titled Cobra Kai that debuted in 2018. He also co-executive produces the series with Ralph Macchio. The series is about 34 years after the events of the primary film and revolves around a down and out Johnny who, seeking to rebuild his life reopens the Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), who has been struggling to take care of the balance in his life without the guidance of his deceased mentor, Mr. Miyagi.
