Jerry Saltz is an art critic from the United States. He has been a senior art critic and columnist for New York magazine since 2006. Jerry won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 2018 after being nominated in 2001 and 2006. He was previously the senior art critic for The Village Voice.
He was born on March 19, 1951 in Oak Park, Illinois, United States. His father invented the Dexter Hand Sewing Machine, and he grew up in Chicago’s inner city before migrating to the suburbs. His mother died when he was ten years old, not long after a remarkable trip to the Chicago Institute of Art, which he remembers fondly. He is a Jew.
He attended the school of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1970 to 1975 before dropping out. He founded an artist-run gallery in the city before moving to New York at 26.
Since 2006, the American art critic has worked as a senior art critic and columnist for New York magazine. He has also contributed to Art in America, Flash Art International, Frieze, and Modern Painting, among other art journals. He was also the senior art critic for The Village Voice.
In his collection of Village Voice articles, Seeing Out Loud, released in 2003, he described himself as the type of critic Peter Plagens refers to as a “goalie,” someone who declares, “It’s going to have to be really good to get by me.” He’s used “termite art” by Manny Farber and Joan Didion’s “Babylon” by Joan Didion, as well as other broad systemic analogies for the art business.
Some have compared him to Rodney Dangerfield of the art world because of his wit, irreverence, self-deprecation, and volubility. He has questioned art reviewers’ power as tastemakers, claiming that they have little impact on an artist’s professional success. Nonetheless, in their 2009 Power 100 list, ArtReview ranked him as the 73rd most powerful person in the art industry.
The college Art Association awarded the art critic the Frank Jewett Mather Award for art criticism in 2007. Saltz is more active on Facebook than many other art reviewers, delivering daily questions and diatribes to his 94,039-strong Facebook fanbase in December 2020. He has remarked that he wishes to demystify the art critic in the eyes of artists and the general public. After receiving complaints from users regarding controversial statements, the art critic was momentarily suspended from Facebook in 2015.
