Amber Ruffin (Amber Mildred Ruffin) was born in Omaha, Nebraska on January 9, 1979. She grew up in a family of five children as the youngest daughter of her parents.

She attended Omaha Benson High School as a student. Ruffin has always loved comedy, but she didn’t get her start on stage until 2001 when she began performing in theaters around her hometown of Omaha.

She felt it was time to step things up a notch in order to learn more expertise and professionalism after spending some time playing for audiences in Omaha. This line of thinking influenced her decision to relocate to Chicago and enter the iO Theater in order to improve her improv skills.

She went on a tour of Amsterdam with Boom Chicago, a well-known Chicago comedy troupe. She appeared in theaters and on various stages while there, as well as writing a lot for the troupe.

When she returned to the United States, she joined The Second City, a long-running improv comedy troupe, and performed in Chicago and Denver. Jenny Hagel, who turned out to be a fellow writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers, became a friend of hers when she was with The Second City.

Ruffin moved to Los Angeles, California in search of more opportunities in the comedy writing and performance fields. She eventually became a member of the comedy troupe RobotDown, which specializes in performing sketches on YouTube. She was soon cast in an episode of Key & Peele, the Peabody Award-winning and multiple Primetime Emmy Award-winning sketch comedy TV series.

In 2014, she auditioned for a part on the popular television comedy show Saturday Night Live. She was not cast in the role for which she auditioned, but she was offered a job as a writer for the Late Night with Seth Meyers show by. She took the job and has been writing for the show since then.

Amber Ruffin’s role as a writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers has provided her with numerous opportunities. She is a writer for the Comedy Central show Detroiters. She also often narrates for another Comedy Central show called Drunk History. Ruffin was nominated for a Writer Guild of America award in 2017 for best Comedy/Variety Series.
