Jana Schmieding is an American actress, producer, podcaster, and blogger best known for her work as a writer and actor on the sitcom Rutherford Falls and as the host of the podcast Woman of Size.
Schmieding is a Lakota woman who grew up in a small Oregon city, where she was raised “pretty traditionally in the Lakota ways,” according to her. She has not revealed anything about her parents and childhood. She grew up along with her older sister named Kristen.
She went to the University of Oregon to study theatre. She also did her master’s in Teaching from Mercy College in New York.
Schmieding moved to New York City after college to fulfill her acting dreams. She spent ten years teaching middle and high school while still doing improv for Magnet Theater in the evenings.
Schmieding relocated to Los Angeles in 2016, where she worked for an educational nonprofit and transitioned from acting to writing. Schmieding hosted “Woman of Size” from 2017 to 2019, a podcast in which she and guests shared their encounters with body size discrimination.
Also, Schmieding was hired as one of 12 writers on Rutherford Falls, a sitcom that will air on the streaming service Peacock, after focusing on her writing for three years. The show revolves around the relationships between characters in a small New York town and the Indian reservation that it borders. Sierra Teller Ornelas, the show’s co-creator and a former guest on Schmieding’s podcasts, recruited her.
