Professional Life and Career

James started playing basketball from high school. He played for Ensworth school from 2016 to 2017. In May 2017, he joined Team Penny, founded by former National Basketball As. In August, he was transferred to Memphis East High School, where he was coached by former NBA player Penny Hardway for his first year.

On November 16, 2017, Wiseman was disqualified for his junior season by the TSSAA because there was an “athletic coaching link” between him and Hardaway. Nonetheless, it was cleared to play on 13 December because the TSSAA regulation “was not explicit in its implementation.”

Moreover, Wiseman played men’s basketball team for The Memphis Tigers, representing the University of Memphis. On 20 November 2018, after strongly considering Kentucky, he pledged himself to Memphis. As a result, he reunited with former high school coach Penny Hardaway.

In August 2019, Wiseman couldn’t join Memphis for a series of preseason exhibition games in Nassau, the Bahamas due to his minor shoulder injury. He was sidelined in the team’s two preseason games in October with an ankle injury.

NCAA Suspension

While playing for The Memphis Tigers men’s basketball team, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) ruled James Wiseman ineligible. Wiseman’s lawyer, Leslie Ballin, revealed that the NCAA deemed that Hardaway, a Memphis alumnus, had acted as a booster. Nonetheless, he was granted a temporary restraining order against the NCAA’s ruling. He was allowed to keep playing by the Shelby County judge. In mid-November, NCAA’s final ruling announced an 11 game suspension after withdrawing an injunction against the NCAA’s ruling. In addition to the suspension, they also ruled Wiseman’s family must donate $11,500 to charity.
