The BC Lions appointed Bates in the fourth round, 32nd overall, of the 2001 CFL Draft. He began 11 matches and missed 7 due to a knee injury in 2004. Bates formed each of the 18 games in 2005, inclusive of the West Division Final.

He once again began all 18 games in the standard season, the Western championship, and the 94th Grey Cup in 2006. After BC beat the Grey Cup in 2006, Bates’ teammates charged him with breaking it. Since 2003, he has been the team’s beginning quarterback.

Coaching Career

For the BC Lions from 2012 to 2014, Bates functioned as the running backs coach and the coordinator of the Canadian College Draft. He was selected as Simon Fraser Clan’s head coach in 2015.
